What is Hosting?

Hosting is an Internet term that describes the means by which websites, blogs and social networks can be seen by the public.

Every page on a website is a file with text and/or graphics in a specific format, ie, html, htm, php, apx. To be seen by the public or even a closed environment, like an office or company, each file must be uploaded (transferred) to what is called servers or storage space. While the amount of storage space available to a customer varies from one hosting company to another, it is usually measured in gigabytes.

A few other hosting terms and services include:

Bandwidth - amount of data that can be transferred over the network in a fixed amount of time expressed in bits per second (bps). Adequate bandwidth is particularly important for websites with video’s, movies or even flash photo albums.

FTP Accounts (file transfer between your computer and the host servers.

SEO - Search Engine Optimization is more than just submitting a website to a particular search engine such as Google™. To be effective it requires knowing how search engines find and rank websites (deciding if a website merits being on the first page or last in a search) and then designing a website to include the elements (alt tags, image naming, relevant text) necessary for optimum ranking.
